Barbara?
As I've mentioned in my profile I'm into names. All kinds of names. I love studying etymology, usage, discuss them, get feedback on them.... So, you can expect to see random posts about names I'm ruminating at the time.
Today I want to get your feedback on Barbara.
I plan to use Barbara for my first daughter (if I have one, but I want a big family and also plan to adopt so I'm relatively confident that I'll have at least one girl). It's to honor my grandmother. Her birth name was Bara, but she was called Barica her whole life (Bara and Barica are Croatian short forms of Barbara and were popular when she was born in 1932). We lived with her after my grandfather died when I was four and she practically raised me and my brother (our parents worked full time). She was my second Mother. Unfortunately she died in 2003:-(
Since I was old enough to think about having kids (so about 10) I have planned to name my daughter after her and my resolve has never wavered. It was never so much about whether I liked the name, but about me loving the person with this name and wanting to honor her and the role she played in my life.
So how do you feel about Barbara? Would you be surprised to meet a baby Barbara?
I also need to mention that I live in Croatia and Barbara is not seen as dated or old lady-ish here. It has never been particularly popular, so it never needed to go out of fashion, so to speak. It is also pronounced much more softly than in English (and which pronunciation I dislike).
Love, Sofy

Anyone here a fan of Melanie Fiona?
My Dad adores her song Monday Morning and he's got me hooked, lol.

Planning a flower garden
My flower garden in the Spring:
It's time to start planning my flower planting for next year. The tulips, daffodils, pansies, etc. need to be in this month. Now I just have to decide on a colour scheme and start digging:-)

Rain, Rain, Go Away!
I live on a big, beautiful river called Sava. But, we had huge amounts of rain this September and the river got bigger and bigger and less and less beautiful:-(
This was the result:
Thankfully, my part of the county was spared, but people on the other bank lost everything. My prayers go out to them.

B-day update
The lottery tickets were a big success:-)
She won a minimal amount on one instant lottery stub and we'll see next week if the other turn over anything (fingers and toes crossed).
No exciting news today. Met a friend for coffee, turned in paperwork at my part-time job (so hopefully I'll have some money next week), registered for a Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English exam in December and had a tutoring session with a 6th grader I work with.
Tomorrow I have a free day, so I'll be relaxing, doing some housework and baking a cake for my Mom's birthday celebration on Saturday (nothing big, just barbecue and cake with family). I also have to make some calls about possible work and a course I'd like to take.
Anyone here do Distance Learning? I might give it a try and would love to hear some first person experiences.

No money B-day
Today is my Mom's 52nd birthday:-) Happy B-day Mom!
I'm lucky and have a great Mom, so I want to get her a nice present. The problem is, I'm unemployed and broke. So, how to give someone a present they'll like and enjoy without spending any (or VERY little) money?
I thought about making something myself, but I have few usable skills for that. Then I looked at discounts to see if I could get her some clothes, but remembered in time that she hated the last sweater/shirt combo I got her.
In the end, considering my limited skills and funds, I've decided to get her an array of lottery tickets and bake a cake and cook lunch (stay tuned for the recipes -I expect there will be plenty of those here, since baking is one of the things I do well and like doing). I'll let you know tomorrow how it went and I'll be sure to let you know if we win the lottery:-)

On the road...
As I said, I love traveling. One of my best trips was a two-week cycling trip to The Netherlands I was on 2 years ago. Pics form that memorable experience:

Name
Meet the inspiration behind my blog name:
I had a few names planed and then when I was creating an account none of them seemed to fit. So, I used a tried and tested method of combining my pet's name and my mother's maiden name (which is long and complicated, so I used just the first three letters). Luckily, the result made sense and Lara's jam was born:-)

The beginning
Well, here I am...posting my first ever blog post!
First let me introduce myself:
I'm 27, of the female gender, interested in books, traveling, my family, friends, dog (not necessarily in that order).
I'm NOT a native English speaker (so fell free to correct any and all mistakes you find in my posts), morning person or a long-winded writer.
Oh, and I'm a procrastinator. Yes, I've admitted it, my deep, dark secret. So, I apologize in advance if I slack off on my posts from time to time, but I will make an effort to post something every day (even if it's only a picture or a link I liked).
